Dr ONG Khim Chye, Gary is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head (Administration) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore. He was Group Head of the Composites and Protective Engineering Group, Department of Civil Engineering from October 2003 to July 2005. He received his B.Eng. from the then University of Singapore and his Ph.D. from the University of Dundee. During his term as Director of the Centre for Construction Materials and Technology (CCMT), NUS from April 1998 to March 2001, the Centre received the ACI Award for outstanding contributions in research and development pertaining to concrete materials and design in September 2000.
He is a Past President of the American Concrete Institute - Singapore Chapter. Elected a Fellow of the Singapore Concrete Institute in 1997 he is one of its Past Presidents. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the ASTM Journal of Testing and Evaluation and the Journal of Ferrocement. He was invited as a Visiting Professor to Yamaguchi University, Japan in November 2001. He was appointed Honorary Professor of Yantai University, China in October 2008.
He is a member of the ISO Technical Committee, ISO/TC71/SC4, Performance Requirements for Structural Concrete and the ISO Technical Committee, ISO/TC71/SC5, Simplified Design Standard for Concrete Structures. From 1986 to 2001 he was a member of the Building and Construction Industry Practice Committee of the Singapore Productivity and Standards Board (PSB) and was a member of the Technical Committee, TC118/9/9, Code of Practice in Structural Use of Concrete, PSB, Singapore from 1986 to 2001. He is currently a member of the Building and Construction Standards Committee and a member of the Technical Committee on Building Structure and Substructure and Convenor of WG3 Task Force on Design â€“ Implementation of Eurocode 2 in Singapore since 2007, of the Singapore Productivity and Innovation Board (SPRING Singapore). He also served as a Member of the Professional Engineers Board (PEB) Sub-committee on Fundamental Engineering Examinations for the registration of professional engineers in Singapore from 1995 to 2000. He is on the PEBâ€™s Committee on Examination System since 2002, a member of the PEBâ€™s Taskforce on Review of PE Act and Rules and currently chairs the subcommittee on Fundamental Engineering Examination (FEE) (Civil Engineering). Professor Ong has been a Technical Assessor for the Singapore Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (SINGLAS/ISO) since 1991 for which he was recognized with a Bronze Award in 1995, a Silver Award in 1998, a Gold Award in 2005 and received the SAC Merit Award from the Singapore Accreditation Council in 2008. He is presently the Chairman of the Technical Committee for Civil Engineering, Singapore Accreditation Council. He was a member of the Industry Advisory Committee of the Construction Industry Training Institute's Management and Technical Training, Building and Construction Authority.
His research interests include advanced composite materials under blast and impact loading, design for disassembly building systems, durability and assessment and retrofit of concrete structures, early age shrinkage using imaging technology and production of recycled aggregates through microwave beneficiation and in which he has edited/co-edited 13 conference proceedings and published more than 180 publications in journals, and conferences.
